Over the past week for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletes, the wrestling season came to an end and the baseball and softball seasons began.
Wrestling
Sophomore Dan Frankenfield, of Dushore, finished 4-2 in the 174-pound weight class to lead Penn College wrestlers at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships in Allen, Texas, Thursday through Saturday. Also for Penn College, freshmen Mason Repogle, of New Enterprise, finished 3-2 at 141; Troy Leid, of Terre Hill, at 157, and Mike Failla, of Beach Lake, at 197, both finished 2-2; Joe Champluvier, of Laceyville, at 157, was 1-2; and Pat Fitzgerald, of Port Royal, at 197, was 0-2.
Frankenfield ended just one win shy of qualifying for the All-American rounds. He carried a 2-1 lead into the second period against Eric Dietz, of Grand Valley State, before being pinned.
Competing in Division I of the tournament, Penn College placed 24th in a field of 28 teams. In previous trips to the NCWA Championships, the Wildcats finished tied for 42nd in 2011, 17th in 2012 and 20th last year.
“We probably should have won a couple more matches than we did. Probably the biggest heartbreaker was Dan Frankenfield’s round of 12. He was actually winning and got caught in a cradle and got pinned. But the guys brought away from this tournament a lot of good experience that is definitely going to help us for years to come,” Penn College coach Schuyler Frey said. “We have a real nice base for next year’s team."
Baseball
Wildcat players finally got outdoors and they celebrated with wins in their first two games of a five-day trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
