Pennsylvania College of Technology alumnus George E. Logue III – a successful entrepreneur, award-winning chef, Army combat veteran, philanthropist and community volunteer – was one of the honorees at Thursday’s 13th annual Education Celebration at The Genetti Hotel.
Presented by the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, the event focuses on the positives that result from cooperation between local school districts and business/industry.
Logue, a 2010 graduate of Penn College's culinary arts and systems major and owner of Acme Barbecue and Catering in downtown Williamsport, was one of two winners of the Alumni of the Year Award. The other was attorney Tammy A. Weber, a 1983 graduate of Lycoming College.
The honor is bestowed upon local college graduates who have become successful and active Lycoming County residents.
Logue joined the Army National Guard while still a student at Montoursville Area High School. After graduating – and after basic training – he began his postsecondary education in eastern Pennsylvania as a business major. Realizing that may not be his calling, he enrolled at Penn College. His start was delayed a year and a half, as his National Guard unit spent six months stateside followed by one year in Iraq, where Logue served as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle gunner and infantryman.
Finally in culinary school, Logue got on-the-job experience as a bartender, cook and server at three popular Williamsport-area restaurants: Franco’s Lounge, Orlando’s Restaurant and 33 East. In 2007, he also worked to raise more than $8,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society during the local Mardi Gras celebration.
In 2010, Logue received his bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude. He opened his restaurant one month prior to his college graduation, specializing in authentic southern-style barbecue. In addition to managing and cooking at the Market Street restaurant, Logue and his company operate a takeout and catering business. He has also developed, bottled and sold his own line of dressings and barbeque sauces.
For the past three years, he has traveled to Memphis, Tenn., to participate in the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest with his team, The Shed Barbecue and Blues Joint, from Ocean Springs, Miss. In May 2013, his hard work paid off: the team garnered first-place honors in the Whole Hog category in the championship finals.
When he can, Logue donates caterings and services to fundraisers and nonprofit organizations. Recently, Acme Barbecue contributed its services to the local Salvation Army, teaming up to make a turkey-themed volunteer appreciation dinner for approximately 100 people.
He remains active with his alma mater as an alumni volunteer, serving as a mentor at Etiquette Dinners, where he interacts with current students while teaching the basics of fine dining in Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. He is also a philanthropic supporter of Penn College, attending Visiting Chef fundraising dinners, Penn College Foundation dinner auctions, and donating to The Penn College Fund and The Penn College Scholarship Campaign.
He and his wife, Danielle, who were married in 2011, live in Williamsport and have a daughter, Charlotte, who was born in 2013.
The evening also included Business Partner in Education honors for Jersey Shore State Bank, and Outstanding Educator and Student Recognition awards to representatives of all nine county school districts.
