Students to Show Off Their ‘Destination Wedding’ Cakes
Wednesday, February 19, 2014
On March 6, the public is invited to view “Destination Wedding”-themed cakes as part of a cake competition for Pennsylvania College of Technology students.
Eight students enrolled in an advanced-level cake decorating course spend about 18 hours of class time on their three-tiered, fondant-covered cakes. Their completed projects will be shown off for judges from the baking and cake-decorating industry, followed by a public exhibition from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the college’s Thompson Professional Development Center.
Visitors may donate cash to cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award winner. The money will be given to the Williamsport YWCA’s Liberty House, which provides rooms for homeless women and their children, as well as programs to assist them in becoming self-sufficient.
The annual contest was initiated by Daniel J. Budiman, a renowned cake decorator and owner of CalJava International, after he visited the college to provide demonstrations to students in the baking and pastry arts major. He continues to sponsor prizes for the contest winners.
Participating students are Samantha-Jo M. Bradley, of Middlebury Center; Ashley E. Gentzyel, of Lock Haven; Amy E. Lynn, of Bloomsburg; Katelyn E. Paulhamus, of Montoursville; Theodore J. Persing, of South Williamsport; Taylor Potter, of Towanda; Lynnette F. Stegmaier, of Muncy Valley; and Kristina M. Williams, of South Williamsport.
Following the competition at Penn College, the cakes will compete in the Cake Decorating Extravaganza as part of the Atlantic Bakery Deli Dairy Expo at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The Expo is scheduled for March 30-31.
