Entries Sought for Gallery’s ‘100 Works’ Centennial Exhibition

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

The Gallery at Penn College has announced a call for entries for its “100 Works!” exhibition opening in October.

With the theme “Past, Present, Future,” the special juried showcase celebrates Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Centennial and is open to all Penn College students, alumni, faculty, staff and retirees, as well as alumni and retirees of the college’s predecessors: Williamsport Area Community College and Williamsport Technical Institute.

Original two- and three-dimensional art in any medium may be submitted. Entry forms and images of art are due by June 20. Up to three original works may be submitted per artist.

The Gallery at Penn College serves as an instructional resource for Pennsylvania College of Technology students and as a cultural asset to the college and community. All entries will be blind-juried by a panel of artists.

Penny Griffin Lutz, manager of the gallery, explained that the “Past, Present, Future” theme is open to interpretation.

“As the college celebrates its Centennial year, it’s a perfect time to ask our students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees to reflect on and creatively explore what the past, present or future means to them,” Lutz said. “This theme can, but doesn’t necessarily have to, apply to the history of the college; the theme is open to interpretation and could be applied to the medium, as well as the visual aspect of the piece.

“For instance, a person may be working in a traditional medium or using techniques they learned in classes at WACC; these could be considered ‘past.’ A futuristic landscape scene of New York City could be considered ‘future.’ All are valid entries.”

A total of 100 works of art will be selected for the exhibition, which runs from Oct. 10 through Nov. 9. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.

According to Lutz, special highlights of the “100 Works!” exhibition include the invitation to current Penn College students – a first for a juried exhibit in the gallery – and more prizes than in past juried exhibits.

Prizes will include Best of Show, Viewers’ Choice, and first and second places in three different categories: Two-Dimensional Paintings and Works On Paper (oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, drawing, and printmaking); Three-Dimensional Sculpture and Objects (ceramics, fiber, wood, glass, metal, craft, installation), and Photography/Other Media (digital, video, mixed media).

'100 Works!' to be displayed in centennial exhibit.Works will be judged in four categories: Style, Artistic Integrity and First Impression; Communication of Past, Present, Future Theme; Design and Composition; and Quality and Control of Medium.

Selection jurors will be professional Pennsylvania artists Chad Andrews, a printmaker; Morgan Craig, a painter; and Terry Wild, a photographer. Prize juror will be Richard Rinehart, director and chief curator of Samek Art Museum at Bucknell University.
