Wednesday, October 9, 2013

The inspirational story of a building construction technology: masonry emphasis major is explored in the latest video added to Pennsylvania College of Technology’s YouTube Channel.

The nearly four-minute video highlights the associate-degree major through the experiences of Nicole Reyes-Molina, of Lancaster.

Reyes-Molina serves as a role model for diverse audiences. She is a young woman thriving in a nontraditional major and is deaf. The video captures Reyes-Molina as she constructs a wall in the college’s masonry lab and plays for the Wildcat women’s basketball team. Her love for masonry and determination to succeed in the male-dominated field are evident, as is her personal ingenuity. Reyes-Molina relies both on lip-reading and an interpreter to effectively communicate in a hearing world.

The masonry major prepares students for a variety of positions such as blocklayer or bricklayer, inspector, sales representative and entry-level management. In an 18,500-square-foot laboratory, students receive hands-on instruction in all aspects of blocklaying, bricklaying and stone, along with the technologies of fireplace and structural masonry construction.

The Penn College YouTube Channel has collected more than 430,600 video views since its debut in 2009. The channel offers student and alumni profiles, news items and unique college stories. It also includes full-length episodes of the college’s award-winning, career-awareness public television series, “degrees that work.tv.”
