Agreement Facilitates Transfer for Dental Hygiene Students

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Pennsylvania College of Technology and Harcum College, Bryn Mawr, recently entered into an articulation agreement that will allow graduates of Harcum College’s associate-degree major in dental hygiene a smooth transition should they choose to continue their education at Penn College.

The agreement awards Harcum graduates 44 technical credits from their dental hygiene program into the Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene: health policy and administration at Penn College. The Harcum College graduate may transfer up to 60 credits toward the bachelor-degree major, which is available at the college’s main campus in Williamsport or online via distance learning.

Shawn A. Kiser, director of dental hygiene at Penn College, and Jean Byrnes-Ziegler, his counterpart at Harcum, worked to establish the seamless pathway for students.

“Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene expand their career opportunities,” Kiser said. “Completing the degree allows students to pursue careers with increasing responsibility and professional leadership roles in the oral health care field.”

“The two programs dovetail nicely,” Byrnes-Ziegler said. “Our graduates are able to continue their education and complete a bachelor's degree in a high-quality, online format while continuing to work in the dental hygiene field. The bachelor’s degree affords them additional career opportunities.”
