Penn College Fall Sports Teams Have Good Week

In their best combined week of the fall sports season, Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams recorded seven wins and just three losses.

Golf
Getting great team scoring for the third time in as many Penn State University Athletic Conference matches, Penn College finished first among seven teams Thursday in the Penn State Schuylkill Invitational.

Calvin “CJ” Foust, of Palmyra, led the way with a 79, good enough to co-medal on the day. He was followed by Alex Howe, of Lake Ariel, with an 81; Corey Teeple, of Lake Ariel, with an 83; and Sam Bubb, of Williamsport, and Bryce Petersheim, of Birdsboro, each with an 85.

As a team, the Wildcats finished with 328 strokes to second-place Penn State DuBois’ 340. Also in the mix were Penn State Lehigh Valley, 345; Penn State Schuylkill, 346; Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 347; Penn State Hazleton, 352; and Penn State Mont Alto, 356.

Women’s Tennis
Facing NCAA Division III Misericordia University on Thursday, the Wildcats lost, 9-0; their fourth defeat in a row. Saturday’s scheduled match with Penn State Mont Alto was postponed due to rain.

Men’s Soccer
Chris Brennan, of New Hope, and Luke McFalls, of New Oxford, scored three goals each as Penn College blanked nonconference foe Valley Forge Christian College, 8-0, on Monday. The Wildcats outshot their opponent, 35-4, behind a strong defensive effort and outstanding play by goalie Malcolm Kane, of Glenside. Also scoring for Penn College were Chris Rutledge, of Macungie, and John Michael Sabga, of Diego Martin, Trinidad. Rutledge also had two assists.

Hosting NCAA Division III Wilkes University on Wednesday in a nonconference match, Penn College suffered a 5-0 loss. Wilkes, which entered the match with a 5-1 record, outshot the Wildcats, 26-11.

Action in a busy week continued Thursday with a 3-1 nonconference win over Mount Aloysius College. Tarik Laroche, of Milton, scored two goals for Penn College and Jacob Tuck, of Hollsopple, had two assists. Also scoring for the Wildcats was McFalls, while Kane had nine saves. Forty-five fouls were called during the match, 21 on Penn College.

In a home defensive struggle on Saturday against conference rival Penn State York, Penn College came away with a 1-0 win as senior goalie David Munn, of Athens, had nine saves and a York defender accidentally knocked in the deciding goal. The Wildcats now are 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The loss was the first in PSUAC play for Penn State York.

Munn was named the PSUAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Goalkeeper of the Week for the period ending Sept. 15.

In the team’s 2-0 week, Munn recorded two shutouts making six saves. So far this year, Munn is perfect with a 1.000 save percentage and 0.00 goals against average.  Last season, he led the PSUAC in goals against average and had an 11-3 record.

Women’s Soccer
At home Thursday, Penn College got goals from Tara Bennethum, of Jonestown; Kelsea Robbins, of Milton; Valeria Passalacqua, of McAlisterville; and Robyn Beddow, of Lancaster, in a 4-1 win over Mount Aloysius College. Madilyn Walters, Lewistown, had two assists in the match, during which the Wildcats outshot their opponents, 28-11.

On Saturday, Beddow scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss at Division III Penn State Harrisburg that dropped Penn College to 2-3 overall.

Cross-Country
Dan Flynn, of Blairstown, N.J., was fourth in 32:06 and Nathan Mashack, of Bloomsburg, was fifth in 32:15 for Penn College in the Penn State Fayette Invitational on Saturday. The Wildcats were two runners short of qualifying for team competition during the event that was won by Penn State Scranton. Also for Penn College, Bill Cox, of Ebensburg, finished 44th in 44:28.

Women’s Volleyball
Loralee Lindemuth, of Tidioute, had 14 kills as the Lady wildcats topped Penn State Scranton, 25-12, 25-13, 25-7 on Wednesday. Courtney Gernert, of Palmyra, aided the cause with 10 kills, four aces and seven digs; Catie Aviles, of Robesonia, recorded 22 assists; and Ashlee Dick, of Petersburg, had nine digs.

On Thursday at Valley Forge Christian College, Gernert notched 17 kills, six service aces and 10 digs to help Penn College beat Valley Forge Christian College, 26-24, 19-25, 25-14, 25-13. Aviles added 25 assists and Rachel Heller, of Allison Park, had 18 digs as the Wildcats improved to 3-8 overall.
