Penn College Golf, Men’s Soccer Teams Stand Out

Pennsylvania College of Technology golf and men’s soccer teams stood out last week as the golfers won their own invitational and the men’s soccer team won both of its matches.

Golf
Playing Monday at the White Deer Golf Complex, Penn College topped a nine-team Penn State University Athletic Conference field with a 323-stroke total. Penn State Lehigh Valley and Penn State Mont Alto tied for second at 346. Alex Howe, of Lake Ariel, led the Penn College individuals with an 80 while Corey Teeple, also of Lake Ariel; C.J. Foust, of Palmyra; and Sam Bubb, of Williamsport, all shot 81. Close behind were Bryce Petersheim, of Birdsboro, with an 82, and Nick Krupka, of Allentown, with an 86.


Women’s Tennis
Up against NCAA Division III Susquehanna University on Tuesday, Penn College lost, 9-0, in straight sets, then did the same against Division III Wilkes University on Sunday to drop to 1-3 overall.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats posted a 3-0 win over Baptist Bible College. Chris Rutletge, of Macungie; Chris Brennan, of New Hope; and Doug Binnie, of Charlton, Mass., scored goals while Tarik Laroche, of Milton, had a pair of assists. Penn College outshot its foe, 29-12.

Back in action Thursday, Brennan scored two goals in a 5-0 rain-shortened PSUAC win over Penn State Schuylkill. Also scoring for the Wildcats were Blayne Allen, of Trumbull, Conn.; Luke McFalls, of New Oxford; and Adrian Bukur, of Hazleton. Goalkeeper David Munn, of Athens, recorded his second shutout of the week as the Penn College defense didn’t allow a shot on goal and the team improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Women’s Soccer
In a defensive struggle at Alfred (N.Y.) University on Saturday, Penn College lost, 2-0, to drop to 1-2 overall. Alfred took 10 shots during the match and the Wildcats just three.

Cross-Country
Nathan Maschack, of Bloomsburg, and Dan Flynn, of Blairstown, N.J., finished 15th and 19th, respectively, among 75 runners in the Cougar Classic at Misericordia University. Mashack ran a 30:12 and Flynn a 30:30. Also for Penn College, William Cox, of Ebensburg, was 72nd in 41:23. In team finishes, Lebanon Valley College was first and Misericordia second. The Wildcats were two runners short of qualifying for team competition.

Women’s Volleyball
Hosting Mount Aloysius College on Monday, Penn College dropped to 0-4 after a 16-25, 20-25, 9-25 loss. Courtney Gernert, of Palmyra, had 12 kills and Catie Aviles, of Robesonia, had 16 assists for the Wildcats.

Tasting PSUAC action for the first time this season, Penn College stopped Penn State Hazleton, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19, to snap a four-match losing streak on Thursday. Gernert recorded a season-high 16 kills and Aviles had a career-high 29 assists.

In the start of a busy weekend on Saturday, the Wildcats dropped matches to Baptist Bible, 23-25, 22-25, 12-25; Wilkes University, 19-25, 13-25, 18-25; and Lycoming College, 6-25, 22-25, 12-25. Gernert led the squad with 34 total kills and Aviles had 44 assists.

Action concluded Sunday with a 15-25, 15-25, 20-25 home PSUAC loss to Penn State Mont Alto that dropped Penn College to 1-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Gernert led with 14 kills and Loralee Lindemuth, of Tidioute, added 12. Rachel Heller, of Allison Park, had 17 defensive digs and Aviles finished with 23 assists.

Also during the week, it was announced that Gernert was named the PSUAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 8.  In two matches, Gernert totaled 17 kills, averaging 2.83 kills per set.  She also notched four aces and digs.
