Assistant School Dean Named at Penn College

Thomas C. Heffner has been appointed assistant dean of sciences, humanities and visual communications: programs at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Heffner comes to Penn College from Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, N.C., where he was program chair and a faculty member for early childhood education.

He joins the leadership team of Clifford P. Coppersmith, dean, and Ed Owens, assistant dean, in the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications. He succeeds Paul R. Watson II, who was appointed dean of academic services and first year programs at Penn College in July.

He complements the strengths of Dean Clifford Coppersmith and Assistant Dean Ed Owens. We look forward to Tom's contributions.”

Coppersmith added: “Tom Heffner brings strong faculty credentials and accomplishment as a faculty leader from his past appointments. He also brings excellent experience in developing and promoting strong applied programs through distance learning. He will be an asset for the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications in the wake of our recent re-organization, acquisition of new programs and the completion of new instructional facilities within the school.”

Before working at Central Piedmont Community College, Heffner served on the early childhood faculty at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Asheville, N.C., and was a program specialist for early childhood education at Penn College. He was also a pre-kindergarten teacher and after school director with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and an early childhood specialist with the Family, Infant & Preschool Program at Morganton, N.C.

He is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (for whom he served as a state board member from 2007-10) and the Council for Exceptional Children.

Heffner has served as a textbook reviewer for McGraw Hill, Person Allyn & Bacon and a peer reviewer for NAEYC.

He holds a Master of Education in child and family studies: early education, as well as birth-kindergarten licensure from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He earned a bachelor’s degree in early education from Juniata College.
