Thursday, June 20, 2013
A health and fitness specialist at Pennsylvania College of Technology’s College Health Center has been designated as a Certified Health Education Specialist by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc.
The certification for Kristi L. Hammaker, who joined the Penn College staff as Fitness Center supervisor in 2000, is the culmination of two years of classes at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and a written examination. The CHES designation after a health educator's name is an indication of competency and commitment to continued professional development.
Hammaker assumed her current position in 2007, assisting the College Health Services director in the development of wellness activities for the college community. She provides information and programs on topics that include stress reduction, healthy sleep habits, preventing colds and flu, alcohol and other drugs, quitting tobacco, mental health, fitness and nutrition, sexual health, body image and eating disorders, and sexual assault.
She is also the adviser to the Healthy Wildcats, a coalition of health-conscious students and employees interested in promoting health and wellness at Penn College.
Hammaker holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and earned a Master of Health Administration degree from The Pennsylvania State University. To be eligible to sit for the certification exam, Hammaker was required to take a total of 10 academic credits in Foundations of Health Education, Community Health, Health Program Planning, Community Health Organization Management, and Evaluation in Health Education and Promotion Programs.
