Dowdrick, Vermilya Named Penn College 'Athletes of the Year'

The Pennsylvania College of Technology Athletics Department named senior archer Joseph A. Dowdrick III, of Lebanon, and first-year women’s soccer player Reda A. Vermilya, of Turbotville, the 2012-13 Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Saturday.

Dowdrick is a four-year member of the archery team and is competing during this spring’s season. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he is ranked first in the nation in the men’s bowhunter discipline. So far this season, he has won two individual trophies and helped the team to six team first places with the bowhunter squad. Dowdrick consistently has been a top contender for the Wildcats, having twice been named a United States Collegiate Archery All-American.

Vermilya had a phenomenal rookie season in goal for the Lady Wildcats last fall, racking up 141 saves and six shutouts while helping the team to eight wins and a berth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament. She led the conference in saves and was third in save percentage. Vermilya’s efforts earned her a spot on the USCAA All-American Second Team, and she also was named "Goalie of the Week" and the Wildcats' Most Valuable Player.

Dowdrick is scheduled to graduate in May with a degree in business administration: management concentration; Vermilya will begin the Fall 2013 semester as a pre-surgical technology major.
