Penn College Archers Strong at Regional Tourney

Sunday, April 14, 2013

Competing at the Northeast Collegiate Archery Tournament at Storrs, Conn., over the weekend, Pennsylvania College of Technology had a dominant performance as it took home 12 first-place trophies.

In Penn State University Athletic Conference games over the past week, Wildcat baseball and softball teams went a combined 3-1. But later in the week, stepping up against NCAA Division II and III foes, they were 0-5.

ARCHERY
Nicole Lapinski, of Bloomsburg, in women’s compound; Kendel Baier, of Jersey Shore, in women’s bowhunter; William McFadden, of New Tripoli, in men’s bowhunter; and Greggory Foust, of Murrysville, in men’s recurve, took home individual trophies.

Lapinski, Rebecca Boyer, of Macungie, and junior Ashley Baker, of Coudersport, swept the women's compound competition taking first, second and third, respectively, and won the team competition. On the men's side, Justus Leimbach, of Westminster, Md., was second, and Matthew Cummings, of Mountville, was third with Jordan McGowan, of Carlisle, fourth, solidifying the men’s team win.

In men's recurve, Foust was followed by Stephen Keys, of Reynoldsville, who was third as the Wildcats’ team took first place. The Penn College women's recurve team took second, but placed no one in the top three.

In women's bowhunter, Brianna Batykefer, of Butler, was third and Cayla Easley, of Carlisle, fourth as the team took a first. In men’s bowhunter, McFadden, Kelvin Dewalt, of Easton, and Joseph Dowdrick, of Lebanon, swept the top three spots and won as a team.

The Wildcats also swept the mixed teams competition in compound, recurve and bowhunter.

This Saturday and Sunday, Penn College hosts the Eastern Regional Intercollegiate Archery Championships.

BASEBALL
The Wildcats picked up right where they left off the previous week, racking up 12-2 and 6-2 victories over Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday to extend their win streak to six games and go to 11-1 in the conference. In the first game, Josh Longsderff, of Columbia, went 3 for 3 at the plate, including a three-run double, and James Simasek, of Landenberg, had a two-run homer to back the seven-strikeout pitching of Brian Santangelo, of Middletown, Conn. In the second game, Simasek and Zachary Weil, of Kutztown, each had two-run singles, and winning pitcher Luke Zamiskie, of Latrobe, allowed just three hits in a game shortened by rain.

Facing nonconference NCAA Division III foe King’s College on Thursday, Penn College fell, 9-4. Cody Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, and Travis Hendershot, of Muncy, each drove in two runs for the Wildcats.

Stepping up against NCAA Division II Mansfield University on Sunday, Penn College dropped the first game, 13-1, and lost the second, 5-2. Weil had a double in the first game and went 1 for 2 with two RBIs in the second as the Wildcats dropped to 10-14 overall.

Also, during the week it was announced that Hendershot was named the PSUAC Co-Player of the Week for the period ending April 7.

SOFTBALL
On Wednesday at Penn State Hazleton, Penn College won the opener, 6-5 in eight innings, but dropped the second, 5-0, in a rain-shortened contest. In the win, Katie Kratzer, of Selinsgrove, went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. The Wildcats are 4-6 in conference games.

Thursday’s scheduled home doubleheader with Luzerne County Community College was postponed because of the weather.

At NCAA Division III Alfred (N.Y.) University on Sunday, the Wildcats lost the first game, 9-0, and lost the second, 15-0, to drop to 6-18 overall. During the doubleheader, Penn College managed just four hits.
