Student challengers prevail in volleyball.Head-to-head competition at the netStaff/faculty squadThe staff/faculty team was getting ready, planning and preparing to extend its winning streak. The students watched as their opponents warmed up and began talking strategy. When Wednesday's volleyball match started, intramural assistant Jeremy R. Bottorf said, you could tell the staff/faculty team meant business. The squad took a lopsided 13-4 lead in the first set, only for the students to storm back. That rally came up short, however, and the staff/faculty team won, 25-22. The victors picked up where they left off when the match resumed, but the students played the spoiler role and ultimately took the second set, 25-23. The third and final set saw the students take a commanding lead; a staff/faculty comeback wasn't enough to forestall the 15-13 final. It was the first time the students have won the traditional grudge match since the 2011 game in Bardo Gym.  "A big 'Thank you' to everyone who played in the game.," said Bottorf, who also provided the photos at left. "Next week, the Staff/Faculty vs. Students Series continues when the two teams battle it out on the softball diamond at Elm Park." Game time is 4 p.m. Wednesday and the employee team comes into the game with a three-game streak on the line!
