Thursday, April 11, 2013

Army Sgt. (and Penn College alumnus) Peter J. Cassarly presents a college flag and certificate to Joann Kay, coordinator of veterans affairs/work-study.A Penn College flag that flew over an alumnus' base in Northern Afghanistan has come home to main campus, where it will be displayed by the Financial Aid Office. Army Sgt. Peter J. Cassarly, a May 2011 graduate who returned in February from service with the Indiana (Pa.)-based 420th Engineering Route Clearance Co., revisited his alma mater Thursday to present the flag to Joann Kay, the office's coordinator of veterans affairs/work-study. An accompanying certificate affirms that the flag – faded by the sun and streaked with desert sand – was flown at Combat Outpost Khilagay on July 4, 2012, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Cassarly, a cum laude graduate of the four-year residential construction technology and management major, emailed the administration in May to obtain a flag, vowing to bring it back to the college at the end of their joint military assignment.
