Gathering with their mentors in a Penn College welding lab, SMART Girls show off their handiwork.Fifty-seven girls from Jersey Shore Area, Milton Area, Montoursville Area and Southern Tioga school districts visited campus Monday during a SMART Girls session for middle schoolers. SMART Girls, which is coordinated by the college’s Outreach for K-12 Office, was developed by Penn College to counter the trend for girls to shy away from math and science as they enter adolescence and high school. The girls attended workshops in welding, electronics, paramedic, occupational therapy, aviation and physical fitness. A one-day SMART Girls event is scheduled May 28 for girls in grades nine to 11, and SMART Girls Summer Camp for rising ninth- to 11th-graders is scheduled June 16-19. NEO Guys, a free, one-day event that brings boys in grades six to eight to campus, is scheduled May 30.
