The Spring 2012 issue of One College Avenue, the magazine of Pennsylvania College of Technology, captured a Bronze Award in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards sponsored by Higher Education Marketing Report.
Penn College earned the award in the Newsletter category for schools with 5,000‐9,999 students. Adelphi University of New York won the Gold Award in the category; Florida Institute of Technology took the Silver. Merit Awards went to Norfolk State University, Barry University and Atlanta University Center.
The Spring 2012 issue, edited by Jennifer A. Cline, writer/editor-One College Avenue, includes a feature written by Tom Speicher, writer/video editor, on culinary arts alumna Kristi Ritchey, who became determined to change her lifestyle after experiencing health issues. She’s now executive chef and director of operations at Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop in Beverly Hills, Calif., where she strives to serve up flavor in a healthy way.
The issue also features a conversation with Domenick S. Schiraldi-Irrera, then a student in applied health-studies: physical fitness specialist concentration. He, too, had a health wake-up call, one that led him to dedicate his career to helping others become physically fit. The story, written by Tom Wilson, writer/editor-PCToday, garnered a Silver Award in the 2013 CUPPIE Awards competition sponsored by CUPRAP-The Association of Communicators in Education.
Also chronicled in the issue is the role that physical fitness specialist faculty member Babe Mayer played in training then-undrafted Henry Hynoski while he waited for an NFL call-up. Hynoski went on to start at fullback for the champion New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.
Other articles in the Spring 2012 issue document a visit to Williamsport by energy mogul T. Boone Pickens (written by Cline) and provide tips to thwart procrastination (written by Sarah K. Patterson, graphic designer). A photo essay of student life at Penn College (compiled by Cindy Davis Meixel, writer/photo editor) rounded out the lineup.
“One College Avenue offers the perfect format for in-depth treatment of stories showcasing the best from Penn College students, alumni, faculty and staff,” said Joseph S. Yoder, public information director. “The Spring 2012 issue features fine contributions from the talented staff in College Information and Community Relations, who work hard to ensure these compelling stories get the attention they deserve.”
The Educational Advertising Awards is the largest such competition in the country. Nearly 3,000 entries were received from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries.
Judging the entries was a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals, and the editorial board of Higher Education Marketing Report.
