Wednesday, February 27, 2013

The United States Collegiate Athletic Association announced its 2012-13 Winter Sports All-Americans and All-Academic Team winners at the national basketball championship banquet Tuesday night.

In Division II, Pennsylvania College of Technology freshman Jamie Steer (South Williamsport) was named a Second Team All-American while senior Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) was an honorable mention.  In addition, Kierstin Steer, senior Adam Smith (Duncannon) and sophomore Patrick Irick (Schwenksville) all made the grade on the All-Academic Team.

All-Americans are chosen based on performance throughout the season.  Jamie Steer was a standout in her rookie season with 19.7 points per game, ranking her fourth in the USCAA.  She was named the Penn State Newcomer of the Year and helped her team to a playoff berth.  Kierstin Steer capped off an impressive four years, becoming the first 1,000-point scorer in women’s basketball for Penn College and ending as the all-time leading scorer with 1,246.  This season, she averaged 11.4 points per game.

The All-Academic Team is comprised of sophomore, junior and senior student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.  This is Smith and Kierstin Steer’s second time on the list while Irick earns the honor for the first time.
