Students Top Century Mark in Intramural Basketball Victory
Wednesday, February 27, 2013
Members of the Penn College community know just how hot Bardo Gym can get, but, on Wednesday night, 102 was not the temperature: It was a basketball team of students that brought the heat! With only five players – four of them in double figures – the students defeated a staff/faculty team, 102-61. Most Valuable Player Matthew Meyers led the way with an amazing 43 points! Stephen Armstrong was second with 23, and Wyatt Decker and Jake Singleton added 16 each. Matthew Strayer tallied 5 points and 12 rebounds for the student team. The staff/faculty team played well, according to intramural assistant Jeremy R. Bottorf, but just didn’t get the breaks that the student team did in the first half. "Numerous shots bounced or rolled off the rim," he said. "At times, you would have though the rim had a lid on it!" The staff/faculty team was led in scoring by Scott Kennell, who had 23 points. Gallahad Mallery got hot late in the second half and had 10 points. Dale Jaenke started the scoring off with a 3-pointer for the staff/faculty team and had 9 points. Shawn McGehean had 6 points, and the father-son duo of Rick and David Wyland scored 4 and 7 points, respectively. "Jami Hughes, who was the player coach for the staff/faculty team chipped in with 2 points," Bottorf said, "but it was her inspirational pep talks at halftime and during timeouts that helped get the staff/faculty team on 7-0 runs twice during the game." Unfortunately for the employee squad, the students didn’t stay cold for long, and the game was soon out of reach. "A big 'Thank you' to everyone who played," added Bottorf , who also provided the photos above. "For more information on other intramural events, stop by the Field House from 1-11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2-10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays to see what fun activities are coming up!"
