Penn College to Host Wrestling Tourney

Sunday, February 24, 2013

Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestlers continue postseason action this week while a host of winter sports athletes were given all-conference honors last week.

On Saturday, Penn College hosts the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Mid-East Conference Championships. The top six wrestlers in each weight class and eight wild cards will advance to the NCWA nationals March 14-16 in Allen, Texas. This is the first time that the college has hosted the event, and coach Schuyler Frey thinks it is a good opportunity.

“We’re excited for it. We’re centrally located for most teams and we’ve got nice accommodations as far as hotels and restaurants, so hopefully we’ll keep hosting it for awhile,” he said.

Action will take place on three mats at Bardo Gymnasium starting at 9:30 a.m.

The Wildcats will send 10 grapplers into action, including Ryan Hart, of Wyalusing, and Camilo Serna, of Whitehall, at 133 pounds; Kyle Sunseri, of Athens, and Cesar Gonzalez, of Woodbridge, Va., at 141; Tyler Myers, of Centre Hall, at 157; Austin Clark, of Elysburg, at 165; Dan Frankenfield, of Dushore, and Logan Gresock, of Copley, Ohio, at 174; and Paul Crutchlow, of Morris Plains, N.J., and Alex Muller, of Sparta, N.J., at 184.

“We’re going to try to peak this week and get everyone (through qualifying) on that plane to Texas,” Frey said.

Competing in preliminary bouts Friday at Bucknell University, Myers recorded a pin against his opponent in the 157-pound weight class to improve to 24-2 on the season. Two other Wildcats – Hart, at 133, and Gonzalez, at 141 – both lost their matches. Thursday’s scheduled preliminary bouts at Bloomsburg University were canceled.

All-Conference Awards
Also last week, 10 Penn College athletes received Penn State University Athletic Conference honors: sisters Kierstin Steer, a senior, and Jamie Steer, a freshman, both from South Williamsport, in women’s basketball; Scott Fenton, a sophomore from Dickson City, in men’s basketball; and wrestlers Myers, a junior; sophomores Clark and Gresock; and freshmen Hart, Frankenfield, Gonzalez and Muller.
