UNIVERSITY PARK – Two Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestlers claimed individual championships and two others finished second Saturday during the Penn State University Athletic Conference/United States Collegiate Athletic Association championships at Rec Hall.
Ryan Hart, of Wyalusing, in the 133-pound weight class, and Tyler Myers, of Centre Hall, at 157, placed first while Austin Clark, of Elysburg, at 165, and Logan Gresock, of Copley, Ohio, at 174, came in second.
Teamwise, Penn College, with 95.5 points, finished second in the PSUAC portion of the tournament behind Penn State DuBois, which had 168 points. The Apprentice School, of Newport News, Va., won the USCAA tournament with 176 points. Penn State DuBois and the Wildcats came in second and third, respectively.
Also for Penn College, Dan Frankenfield, of Dushore, finished third at 174; Alex Muller, of Sparta, N.J., was fourth at 184; and Cesar Gonzalez, of Woodbridge, Va., was sixth at 141.
“Ryan wrestled an extremely good tournament, especially in the finals (where he won on a 1-0 decision over Shane Smith, of The Apprentice School),” Penn College coach Schuyler Frey said. “Tyler just continues to be a man on a mission. He wrestled a really good kid in the finals (a 6-1 win over Shane Alterio, of Penn State DuBois),” the coach continued.
Hart went 3-0 on the day and is 15-1 for the season, Myers went 2-0 during the tournament and is 23-2 overall. Clark and Gresock both were 2-1 on the day and Frankenfield 3-1. Gresock now is 14-1 for the season.
“For the most part, everyone wrestled well. There were a couple of letdowns, a couple of matches we should have won, but this was a good opportunity for us to get ready for the Mid-East Conference championships (a qualifier for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association championships) in two weeks. We’ll come back and work hard on some of the things we need to improve on.
“DuBois had a nice solid, full lineup and we’ve been hurting all year to put up a full team. We wrestled tough, but our hat is off to them, they did a good job,” Frey added.
