Inauguration, King Holiday Coincide on Penn College Campus
Monday, January 21, 2013
Faculty/staff and students stopped by Penn’s Inn during Monday’s noontime inauguration of President Obama, as C-SPAN's televised coverage was broadcast via the room’s projection screen. The event, coordinated by the Student Activities Office, included lunch prepared by Dining Services. Prior to the swearing-in ceremony, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech was shown. (This was only the second time in U.S. history that a presidential inauguration fell on the King holiday; the first was in 1997, the start of President Clinton's second term.) Student Activities also sponsored a 6 p.m. dialogue there for members of the campus and broader community, a 90-minute discussion designed to allow participants to hear one another’s perspectives and hopes regarding race and diversity. At noon Tuesday, Student Activities hosted "Is This Really the Dream? Have We Made It?" in Room 105C of the Campus Center.
