Beginning with the new year, Pennsylvania College of Technology’s North Campus will offer its array of noncredit education programs and industry training from a new location.
The 35-acre North Campus facility on Route 6 is being sold to Shell, and the college will begin renting instructional space from the Wellsboro Area School District.
The Practical Nursing and Medical Assistant programs at the North Campus will continue operation at Wellsboro Area High School, 225 Nichols St., Wellsboro. ShaleTEC-related programming and other classes will be offered in the district’s Administrative Building next door.
ShaleTEC (Shale Training & Education Center), a collaboration between Penn College and Penn State Extension, was established as a central resource for workforce development and training needs associated with the oil and natural gas industry. Although the central office is located in Williamsport, training is offered at many locations, including the North Campus.
Analysis shows a continuing need for health-care and Marcellus-related noncredit training in the region.
“We remain committed to providing education and training services in the Northern Tier – and to offering opportunities that are closely aligned with the needs of the region’s employers,” said Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour. “Our current North Campus facility is larger than required for these purposes, and the new location allows us to continue offering this vital programming and training without interruption.”
The new North Campus location will house noncredit and clock-hour training programs and will build on the long history of hands-on programs designed to address needs in the health-care and natural gas career fields. Other offerings include leadership training, business development, soft skills, pre-employment, computer and personal enrichment classes.
In the past year, more than 70 classes were held and more than 600 individuals were trained at the North Campus. The new location can accommodate the same or a greater number of classes and individuals and features a capacity to grow as additional training needs are identified. The last class in the current facility will be held Dec. 19.
“We are looking forward to this partnership with the Wellsboro Area School District, and we plan to provide more opportunities for high school and post-high school students,” said Brenda Abplanalp, director of North Campus outreach services.
The new mailing address for the Penn College North Campus will be PO Box 368, Wellsboro, PA 16901.
