Penn College Faculty Member Presents Paper at Johns Hopkins

William J. Astore, professor of history at Pennsylvania College of Technology, recently presented a paper at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Astore spoke on Sept. 13 as part of the Johns Hopkins Colloquia Series in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. The title of his paper was “One Size Doesn’t Fit All: The Perils of Developing ‘Big’ Software Systems for the U.S. Military.”
The paper focused on the U.S. Air Force’s efforts to develop and field automated mission planning systems in the 1990s, an effort Astore was involved in when he was on active duty in the Air Force.
Astore joined the Penn College faculty in 2005. He holds a doctorate in modern history from the University of Oxford, a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His books and articles focus on the history of science, religion and technology, often with a military emphasis.
