The past week was a great one for Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams. Through Sunday, they won nine events and lost just twice, while three of them learned they are ranked among the top 20 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cross-Country
Competing in a nonconference invitational at Misericordia University on Saturday, the Penn College men finished ninth with 282 points in a 14-team field. Freshman Dan Blauvelt, of Flemington, N.J., was the top finisher for the Wildcats, placing 46th among 174 runners in 30:06.4 in the 8K race. Right behind for Penn College was sophomore Dan Starr, of Stewartstown, who was 47th in 30:09.75. Dan Flynn, of Blairstown, N.J., was 50th in 30:23.81. Lycoming College was 13th in men’s team competition with 352 points. Elizabethtown College won with 36 points. For the Penn College women in a 6K race, Eileen Harrington, of Springfield, Va., finished in 37:04.19.
Men’s Soccer
On Monday at home with Valley Forge Christian College, Penn College dominated in a 7-0 win. The Wildcats outshot their opponents, 44-5. Goalie Jonatan Leon-Ruiz, of Landenberg, recorded the win with two saves and shared the shutout with freshman Samuel Piatt, of Bedford, who played the final 13 minutes. Both are freshmen.
At Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Penn College got two goals from Christopher Brennan, of New Hope, in a 6-1 win. Tarik LaRoche, of Milton, added a goal and an assist.
In Penn State University Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Brennan, Jose Gomez-Zavala, of Kennett Square, and Christopher Rutledge, of Macungie, each scored two goals in a 12-0 win over Penn State Schuylkill. The Wildcats outshot Schuylkill, 52-3. The win improves the Wildcats to 4-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Women’s Soccer
A goal by Cayla Easley, of Carlisle, in the 75th minute lifted Penn College over Mt. Aloysius College, 3-2, on Thursday. Valeria Passalacqua, of McAlisterville, scored the Wildcats’ other two goals, with Easley assisting on one.
At home on Sunday, Jocelyn Moyer, of Tower City, scored the winning goal in the 65th minute to help lead the team to a 3-1 win over Washington Adventist University. The win lifted the Wildcats to 4-1 overall.
Golf
In its season opener, delayed one week due to a weather postponement, the Wildcats finished second in an eight-team tournament at Penn State Mont Alto on Tuesday. The host school finished with a 321 and Penn College with a 325. Individually among 46 golfers, Penn College’s Alex Howe, of Lake Ariel, placed second with a 76.
Team Tennis
Penn College opened its season Tuesday at Penn State Hazleton with a 9-0 win. Nathan Scott, of Canton, Conn., and Adam Smith, of Duncannon, won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, and teamed for a win at No. 1 doubles. Also winning in both singles and doubles for the Wildcats was Jordan Rodgers, of Biglerville. For the Penn College women, Taylor Lapointe, of Pelham, N.H., also won in both singles and doubles.
At home with Penn State Brandywine on Saturday, Penn College fell, 8-1, as only the No. 2 men’s doubles team of Rodgers and Christopher Morrin, of Morrisville, won.
Women’s Volleyball
Tara Powell, of Burgettstown, recorded 19 kills and 25 digs as the Wildcats split a doubleheader Wednesday night, losing to Mt. Aloysius College, 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 18-25, 24-26), before beating Valley Forge Christian College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-8 and 25-16). Powell recorded 13 kills and 21 digs in the first game while freshman Gabrielle George, of Morton, had a season-high 23 digs. In the second match, Melissa Lake, of Winburne, led the team with seven kills while Powell added five service aces.
Playing its first conference matches of the season on Saturday, Penn College topped Penn State DuBois, 25-4, 25-11, 25-12, and Penn State Hazleton, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18. Kelly Hebert, of Wellsboro, had nine blocks in the two matches while Tara Powell, of Burgettstown, had 16 kills and nine service aces as the team improved to 4-3 overall.

In the most recent USCAA Coaches’ Poll, the Penn College men’s soccer team is ranked No. 7, the women’s soccer team is No. 10 and the women’s volleyball team is No. 19.
