Monday, July 30, 2012

An associate professor of HVAC at Pennsylvania College of Technology was honored as “Instructor of the Year” at a recent industry banquet in Providence, R.I.

Richard C. Taylor, department head for heating, ventilation and air conditioning in the college’s School of Construction and Design Technologies, received the award from the Oil and Energy Service Professionals (formerly the National Association of Oil Heating Service Managers).

Richard C. Taylor“Rick is a true expert in his profession and is excited when he can share his knowledge with students,” said Marc E. Bridgens, the college’s dean of construction and design technologies.

That student-faculty interaction was also reflected in comments from Matt Wagner, president of the organization’s Susquehanna Valley Chapter, who presented the award.

“A good instructor is the person who kindles the drive to learn and gives us the fuel to succeed,” said Wagner, of Sunbury.  “This instructor is a highly motivated, dedicated professional who strives to motivate his students to be outstanding oil heat technicians. He keeps abreast of new technologies to provide his students with the most up-to-date information in our industry.”

Eleven Penn College students have received scholarships from the trade organization (at least one per year since 2003), he noted, adding that Taylor serves as secretary to the local chapter and has brought students to several conventions.

One of those students – Zachary R. Baylor, of Danville – received a $5,000 scholarship in Rhode Island that was sponsored by Weil-McLain, a national manufacturer of oil- and gas-fired boilers.

A faculty member since 1997, Taylor holds a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University.
