Monday, July 9, 2012

Pennsylvania College of Technology has announced its 2012 inductees for its Athletics Hall of Fame.

The class is the first for the new Hall of Fame, started by Athletic Director Scott E. Kennell, and features individuals and student-athletes from Penn College and Williamsport Area Community College history.

“Setting up a Hall of Fame has been a priority since I started,” Kennell said. “We’ve got a great first induction class made up of some talented and dedicated individuals who have done Penn College proud.”

The inductees are Max Wasson, Mike Stanzione, Chet Schuman, Chad Karstetter (Penn College Class of 1999), Brian Parker (’97), Steve Craig (’98), Bobby String (01) and Katlyn (Stupar) Albitz (’06).

The induction ceremony will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, during Penn College’s Homecoming celebrations. The official website for the Hall of Fame will be launched in September via Penn College’s athletics site.

A new class will be inducted each year and nominations can be made online.

The class of 2012:

Max Wasson was the head coach of the wrestling program for Williamsport Area Community College from 1970-82.  In those 13 years, his teams amassed an impressive 95-39-1 (.710) record and captured eight Eastern Pennsylvania Community College Athletic Conference (EPCCAC) Championships.

Mike Stanzione served as the first director of athletics for Penn College, starting in 1991. Over the next 17 years, he built the program to 13 varsity intercollegiate sports while serving as the head baseball coach for 13 years. As coach, his teams won five conference championships and he was a five-time Coach of the Year.

Chet Schuman coached the Penn College golf team for nine years (2000-08). During that time, his teams put together a 155-match unbeaten streak and captured six straight conference titles (2003-08). He also coached three Penn State University Athletic Conference individual champions and was a four-time Coach of the Year.

Chad Karstetter, Brian Parker and Steve Craig were the first Penn College student-athletes to capture a national championship, winning the men’s compound national competition in 1998. All three were named All-Americans and helped start a tradition of excellence by Penn College archery.

Bobby String was a two-year letter winner for the Penn College men’s basketball program and scored 1,022 points to become the first male player to top the 1,000-point career scoring mark.

Katlyn (Stupar) Albitz was a two-year letter winner for Penn College women’s basketball. She was a prolific scorer for the Wildcats and a two-time all-conference selection.  In 2005-06, she led the team to the Wildcats' only conference championship in women’s basketball history.
