Celebrity Again Puts His Money Where Students’ Degrees Work

Two recent Pennsylvania College of Technology graduates are among the nation's top diesel/heavy equipment majors to receive tool scholarships from the mikeroweWORKS Foundation.

Adam W. Borek, of Muncy, and Terrence E. Freas, of Lititz, who graduated in May from the School of Natural Resources Management's heavy construction equipment technology: Caterpillar equipment emphasis major, each was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Mike Rowe is the creator and host of the widely watched and acclaimed show "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery Channel. A presence on television and the Web through his relationships with Ford, Caterpillar Inc., Cat Footwear, Master Lock and Kimberly-Clark, he and his foundation are dedicated to promoting the skilled trades, including construction-related industries.

Sullivan, Pennsylvania College of Technology’s dean of natural resources management.Borek and Freas were among the scholarship winners chosen across the country from Associated Equipment Distributors-affiliated technical colleges for their high cumulative GPAs as of the end of the Fall 2011 semester.

“This scholarship promotes our programs at a national level, and it is encouraging that the mikeroweWORKS Foundation recognizes the value of heavy equipment technicians and rewards our students for their efforts,” said Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management at the college.

The awards follow last year's scholarship for Andrew C. Reisinger, who graduated from Penn College in May 2011 with a degree in heavy construction equipment technology: technician emphasis. He subsequently met Rowe during a trade show in Las Vegas and was invited to appear with him in New York for a celebrity edition of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

In addition to the scholarship, Borek also received the American Infrastructure Award, presented at the end of the semester to the top performing graduate in his major.
