Pennsylvania College of Technology will hold three commencement ceremonies at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport on May 11-12 for the 962 students who have petitioned to graduate following the Spring 2012 semester.
At 3 p.m. Friday, May 11, a ceremony will be offered for students from the schools of Industrial and Engineering Technologies, Integrated Studies, and Natural Resources Management.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, a ceremony will be offered for students from the schools of Construction and Design Technologies and Health Sciences. At 1:30 p.m. that day, a ceremony will be offered for students from the schools of Business and Computer Technologies, Hospitality, and Transportation Technology.
The student speaker for the May 11 ceremony is Alison R. Beitz, Millville, who will receive a bachelor's degree in graphic communications management. Speaking at the 10 a.m. ceremony on May 12 is Jason T. Maddox, South Williamsport, who will receive a bachelor's degree in building science and sustainable design. The student speaker for the 1:30 p.m. ceremony on May 12 is Clint Hinton, Lock Haven, who will receive a bachelor's degree in aviation maintenance technology.
Beitz has served as vice president and secretary for the college's chapter of Gamma Epsilon Tau, an honors fraternity for the graphic arts, and she is a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society.
She earned first place for spot color lithography in the 2010 International Graphic Arts Education Association's Gutenberg Awards competition and second-place for spot color flexography. She will receive this year's Harvey A. Martin Memorial Award at Penn College, presented to a faculty-selected graduate of graphic communications who exhibits a commitment to the profession and love of the major.
Maddox, who also earned an associate degree in individual studies in 2006, served as president and co-founder of the college's U.S. Green Building Council student chapter, which seeks to promote sustainable building practices and raise awareness of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) through education, outreach and advocacy. He also participated in a variety of civic activities, including the "Canstruction" competition to fight hunger in the community and the Alternative Spring Break with Heifer International, a nonprofit agency dedicated to ending hunger and poverty.
He received Peer Review and Green Awards from the architecture department, and he will receive a Penn College Award, an honor recognizing graduating students who have demonstrated outstanding student leadership or have contributed significantly to student life.
Hinton is a four-year member of the Penn College archery team and was a member of the 2010 men's compound national championship squad. He is a Federal Aviation Administration-certified airframe and powerplant mechanic.
He served six years in the U.S. Air Force, including two tours of Iraq. Hinton will receive the Aviation Technology Faculty Award, which is presented to a graduate who demonstrates academic achievement, ethics, teamwork, professionalism and a commitment to excellence in the field of aviation maintenance.
During the commencement ceremonies, the college will bestow Distinguished Alumni and Alumni Achievement awards. Distinguished Teaching Awards will be presented to faculty.
Degrees will be conferred by Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour, assisted by retiring Board of Directors Chairman Robert E. Dunham.
