During a week in which the sports schedule was shortened due to the Easter break, the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team went 2-1 and the softball team 1-3.
Baseball After suffering their first conference loss of the season a week ago Sunday, the Wildcats bounced right back Tuesday with wins over Penn State York by scores of 6-1 and 9-2. In the first game, Thomas Hughes, of Easton, had two hits and drove in three runs. In the nightcap, Travis Hendershot, of Muncy; James Scully III, of Middletown, Del.; and Christian Calle, of College Point, N.Y.; each had two hits as the team improved to 7-1 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
Stepping out of the conference Thursday against NCAA Division III Marywood University, Penn College fell, 10-5, to go to 14-7 overall. Cody Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored and a run batted in.
During the week, it was announced that senior Garrett Hornung, of Emporium, was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and PSUAC Player of the Week for the week ending April 1. Hornung helped lead the Wildcats to a 6-2 week, batting .583 (14-24) with 11 runs scored and four runs batted in. In the team's sweep of Penn State Fayette, he hit .857 (6-7) with three runs scored and three RBI.
In the second USCAA Coaches Poll, the Wildcats moved up eight places to No. 12.
Softball On Tuesday, Penn College snapped a 15-game losing streak and handed Penn State Schuylkill its first loss of the season, 3-2. Schuylkill won the second game, 6-0, behind Bryanna Snowell's no-hit, eight-strikeout pitching effort. In the opener, Lacy Lose, of Avis, had two hits and drove in three runs while picking up the win on the mound. In conference play, Penn College is 1-7.
Facing NCAA Division III Elmira, N.Y., College on Wednesday, the Wildcats were blanked by scores of 15-0 and 10-0 to fall to 2-18 on the season. Stephanie Koleno, of Moshannon, led Penn College with four hits on the day.
Thursday's scheduled games at Alfred (N.Y.) State were postponed.
