Baseball Team Off to Great Conference Start; Archers Claim Titles

Sunday, April 1, 2012

After its first week of Penn State University Athletic Conference play, the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team is off to a great start while the college's softball team still is looking for its first win.

Baseball The Wildcats opened the week with a Monday makeup game that resulted in a 19-1 win in six innings over Baptist Bible College. Cody Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, went 3 for 5 at the plate with four runs batted in while Travis Hendershot, of Muncy, went 3 for 4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Pitcher Harrison Myers, of Lebanon, got the win on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Penn College rapped out 15 hits in the game.

On Tuesday against NCAA Division III King's College, the Wildcats built a 4-0 lead through five innings but couldn't hold on in a 7-5 loss. Cody Buterbaugh again led the Penn College offense with three hits and two RBI. Garrett Hornung, of Emporium, added three hits and scored twice. Late-game Penn College errors, shaky relief pitching and timely King's hits proved to be the difference after Josh Longsderff, of Columbia, breezed through the first four innings with only one hit and seven strikeouts.

In its first conference games of the campaign on Thursday, Penn College beat Penn State Mont Alto, 3-2 and 7-2. Myers, with six strikeouts, and Brian Santangelo, of Middletown, Conn., picked up the mound wins while Zachary Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, had four hits and two RBI on the day. In the second game, Hendershot went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles.

On Saturday against Penn State Fayette, Jacob Wrenn, of Granville, Mass., and Jarod Bull, of Jacobus, were the winning pitchers as the Wildcats won by scores of 2-1 and 8-3. Hornung led the offense with six hits, four RBI and three runs scored.

Going into Sunday's doubleheader against Penn State Beaver, Penn College was 5-0 in the PSUAC and Beaver 2-0. Penn College took the first game, 6-4, and Beaver the second, 3-2.

"We started out well. We feel like we let one slip away in the second game, but the guys have been playing well," coach Chris Howard said. Skyler Gingerich, of Lititz, went 2 for 3 in both games Sunday and Hornung was 2 for 2 in the second game. Longsderff picked up the first-game win.

Penn College, now 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference, was ranked No. 20 in the first USCAA Coaches' Poll.

Softball Penn College dropped a pair of games to conference leader Penn State Mont Alto on Thursday by scores of 9-1 and 10-9. Dana Ritter, of Walden, N.Y., had two hits in the opening loss and Stephanie Koleno, of Moshannon, had two hits in the nightcap.

Facing Penn State Fayette on Saturday, the Wildcats lost 9-6 in eight innings and 13-0 in five innings. In the first game, Ritter, Koleno and Maggie Calkins, of Bloomsburg, each had two hits. Penn College managed just five hits in the second contest.

On Sunday against Penn State Beaver, the Wildcats lost by scores of 13-0 and 3-0 to drop to 1-15 overall and 0-6 in the PSUAC.
