Eleven civic-minded Penn College students from three academically based campus organizations participated in Saturday's "Canstruction" competition to help fight hunger in the community. The groups the Architectural Student Association, the Student Nurses' Association and the U.S. Green Building Council Students of Penn College toted their grocery purchases and creative skills into the Bush Campus Center for the design/construction challenge. Sara R. Hillis, associate director of student activities, said that, while cardboard and other materials are allowed, the structures need to be supported entirely by canned goods. The three projects, each limited by contest rules to 100 square feet of floor space, will be on display through 6 p.m. Tuesday in Penn's Inn, after which all of the food used in the structures (as well as any donated by spectators) will go to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank's Williamsport branch.
