Green Careers Episode of Penn College TV Series Premieres April 12

Green careers are the focus of the latest episode of "degrees that work.tv," an award-winning documentary series produced by Pennsylvania College of Technology and WVIA Public Media.
Rewarding career possibilities in energy efficiency and renewable energy are explored during the show, which premieres throughout northeastern and northcentral Pennsylvania on April 12 at 8 p.m. on WVIA-TV.
The term "green careers" can be cryptic, but the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has helped quantify it with the Green Jobs Report, a study that identifies promising green industry sectors employing people throughout the state and nation. A previous episode of "degrees that work.tv" examined two of the sectors: agriculture and resource conservation and pollution prevention and environmental cleanup.
This episode, titled "Going Green Part II," covers energy efficiency and renewable energy through the eyes of students enrolled in the college's unique building science and sustainable design major. Seniors working on their capstone project are followed as they construct a scale model of a section of Seattle and individually design a green, mixed-use building for the city. At the end of the semester, students present their final design to faculty and classmates.
Graduates of the building science and sustainable design major have many career options, ranging from green building analyst to sustainable designer to solar project manager.
Tyler L. Walter, New Paris, whose project is highlighted during the episode, is using his degree as a steppingstone to becoming an architect. In addition to building science and sustainable design, Penn College offers numerous associate and bachelor's Following its April 12 premiere, the "Going Green Part II" episode of "degrees that work.tv" will be rebroadcast on WVIA on April 14 at 10 p.m., April 15 at 12:30 p.m., April 16 at 7 p.m. and April 19 at 8 p.m. The episode also will be part of a "degrees that work.tv" marathon on Earth Day, April 22.
All six "degrees that work.tv" episodes "Nanotechnology," "Welding," "Advanced Manufacturing," "Plastics," "Going Green Part I" and "Going Green Part II" will air on WVIA beginning at 1 p.m.
The "degrees that work.tv" series is a public-service initiative that connects young people to workforce needs and viable career paths for the future. Following a story-driven approach, episodes highlight the technologies, educational foundation and opportunities within career clusters. Free educational materials designed for classroom use have been developed to accompany the series.
