Despite being a newcomer on the competitive scene, the 2011-12 Penn College dance team won first-place trophies in two recent appearances. On March 17, team members Kelsey A. Coppersmith, Kelly M. Daum, Brandy L. Krause, Samantha L. Lantz, Maggie K. Calkins, Melanie A. Roof, Melina C. Webb, Chelsey R.Whitaker and team assistant Liza J. Pritchyk traveled to Central Mountain High School. Entered in a Tournament Indoor Association competition, the team placed first with its three-song routine to "Knock on Wood," "Krazy" and "I Get It." Those same team members joined by Taylor C. Biery, Rebecca M. Boyer, Courtney A. Davis and Nicole M. Krater also won top honors in December's Universal Dance Association competition in Slippery Rock. Entered under two categories in its first competition, the team performed "I Get It" for hip-hop and "Welcome to the Jungle" in jazz. Although their season has started on a high, the young women are hoping to improve their overall score each time. The team will compete April 14 at Bald Eagle and April 21 at Mansfield University, and, if selected, at the Greater Susquehanna Region Championship on April 29 in Bellefonte.
