Magazine Profile of Graduate's Valiant Recovery Earns Accolade

A feature article about a young Pennsylvania College of Technology alumnus's road to recovery from heart-transplant surgery was honored with a bronze award in a competition sponsored by a professional association of education communicators.
"True Blue," written by Tom Wilson for the college's magazine, One College Avenue, received a 2012 Bronze "CUPPIE" Award in the Feature Article category in the annual competition sponsored by CUPRAP, The Association of Communicators in Education.
The article profiles John R. Greenwood, former captain of the Wildcat cross-country team, and the support he found before and after his recuperation from a nine-hour procedure performed at Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia.
The strong-willed Greenwood postponed surgery until after May 2010, when he graduated from Penn College with a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering technology and associate degrees in automated manufacturing technology and toolmaking technology.
Wilson, a writer/editor for Public Information within the Office of College Information and Community Relations, serves as editor of the college's news-and-information website, PCToday . He has been employed at the college since 1999. Previously, he worked as city editor for the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. He is a 1979 journalism graduate of The Pennsylvania State University.
"John Greenwood's story is remarkable, and Tom does a fine job profiling the courage and determination shown by John, the professionalism demonstrated by his medical team, and the support offered by family members and fellow students," said Joseph S. Yoder, public information director. "This feature epitomizes the type of inspiring stories we seek to convey in the magazine."
One College Avenue is edited by Jennifer A. Cline, who accepted the award for the college at the CUPRAP Professional Development Conference in Hershey on March 15.
The magazine is dedicated to sharing the educational development, goals and achievements of Penn College students, alumni, faculty and staff with one another and with the greater community. One College Avenue can be viewed online .
The fifth annual CUPPIE Awards garnered nearly 280 entries from institutions in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. The competition judges are experts in the field of communications in education and include designers, writers, educators, corporate executives and media professionals.
Founded in 1980, CUPRAP is an organization of communications professionals from colleges, universities and independent schools dedicated to advancing the understanding of higher education and enhancing the professional development of its members. The organization has nearly 400 members from 100 institutions who work in public relations, media relations, marketing, publications, sports information, and web and graphic design.
