Pennsylvania College of Technology basketball and wrestling teams returned to action following the semester break with the wrestlers winning all three of their matches while the basketball squads found the going tougher.
Flashback WrestlingSaturday, in a Penn State University Athletic Conference quadrangular at Penn State Beaver, Penn College defeated Penn State Fayette, 28-15; Penn State Beaver, 30-6; and Penn State Mont Alto, 41-6, as it improved to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Five Wildcats won all three of their bouts on the day, including Kyle Sunseri, of Athens, at 141 pounds; Derek Leiby, of Troy, at 149; Tyler Myers, of Centre Hall, at 157 and 165; Logan Gresock, of Wadsworth, Ohio, at 184 and 197; and Jasper Ocker, of Burnham, at 197 and 235.
Men's Basketball During the semester break, Chris Lemasters was named the interim head coach of the men's team.
"It's going to be a tough year. We lost nine of our top 10 guys from last year and two (of them were) 1,600-point career scorers," pointed out Lemasters. "We have a very young group of guys, but they play extremely hard. I think they have a good cohesiveness. This year is going to be a rebuilding process," he added.
"Chris brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach to our program," said athletic director Scott Kennell. "His experience and enthusiasm will prove to be invaluable as he and the current members of our program continue their quest to qualify for the PSUAC Tournament."
Lemasters played high school basketball at Mansfield, where he was a three-year varsity starter and captained the team in his junior and senior years before graduating in 2002. Afterward, he started four years at Alfred, N.Y., University and was a team captain three years.
In addition to coaching, he works as a coordinator of residence life at Penn College.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Lemasters said, "I think there are going to be some very winnable games in the conference and that's our biggest thing just to give it a fight every single game."
In a nonconference game Thursday against NCAA Division III Wilkes University, the score was tied at 30-all at the intermission, but Wilkes took control with a 70-point second half in a 100-61 Penn College loss. Scott Fenton, of Dickson City, led the Wildcats with 18 points.
Returning to PSUAC action on Saturday, Fenton again scored 18 points, but the Wildcats lost to Penn State Fayette, 104-53.
On Sunday at Penn StateYork, Penn College fell, 89-50, to drop to 1-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Fenton scored 21 points and Colton Acorn, of Wellsboro, added 10.
Women's BasketballPlaying in her first game of the season after joining the team over the semester break, Dana Reed, of Sunbury, scored 19 points, but it wasn't enough to keep Penn College from falling to Penn State Fayette, 87-66, on Saturday. Reed also led the team with 10 rebounds.
At Penn State York on Sunday, the Wildcats fell, 63-60. Kierstin Steer, of South Williamsport, led Penn College with 17 points but had four fouls the entire second half limiting her playing time as the team dropped to 1-10 overall and 1-4 in the PSUAC.
