Gallery at Penn College to Host 'Rights of Passage' Exhibit

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of the Madigan Library at Pennsylvania College of Technology, will host the mixed-media work of artist Anila Quayyum Agha from Jan. 10 to Feb. 22 in an exhibit titled "Rights of Passage."Agha works in a cross-disciplinary fashion, creating artwork that explores and comments on global politics, cultural multiplicity, mass media, and social and gender roles. As a result, her artwork is conceptually challenging, producing complicated weaves of thought, artistic action and social experience.
"I use thread as a drawing medium, which both connects the multiple layers that result from my exploration of how concept and process interact, and bridges the gap between modern materials and the historical and traditional patterns of oppression and domestic servitude," she said. "Within my work, the use of the needle and thread embodies an essential femaleness and represents the domestic identity of women and their ambivalent relationship to that identity."
Agha is an assistant professor of drawing at the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan, where she completed a bachelor's degree in textile arts. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in fiber arts from the University of North Texas. Agha exhibits nationally and internationally.
She was a recipient of the Efroymson Arts Fellowship in 2009 and has received grants for research and travel to Pakistan, the United Kingdom and Spain.
The gallery will host a Meet the Artist Reception with Agha on Jan. 10 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with artist's comments at 5:30.
The gallery is open Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 2 to 7 p.m.; and Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Saturday and Monday).
