Women Volleyball Players Honored; Wildcats Among Early 'Cup' Leaders

Eight Pennsylvania College of Technology women's volleyball players were honored recently during the college's fall sports banquet.
Tara Powell, of Burgettstown, and Lyndsey Smith, of Mechanicsburg, shared the Most Valuable Player award; Kasey Smith, of New Park, and Paula Monteiro, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were named Most Inspirational; Courtney Gernert, of Palmyra, and Lindsay Moyer, of Canton, were Most Dedicated; Lauren Zinn, of Dillsburg, won the Most Improved award; and Kelly Hebert, of Wellsboro, was the Rookie of the Year.
Coach Bambi Hawkins guided the Wildcats to a 20-13 overall record, including the team's first-ever appearance in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs. In Penn State University Athletic Conference play, Penn College boasted a 16-2 record and placed second. In 12 seasons under Hawkins, the Wildcats have gone 161-102.
Through the women's volleyball season, Penn College garnered enough points during the PSUAC playoffs to emerge among the early leaders in the Chancellor's Cup standings. Prior to the men's soccer championship Oct. 31, the Wildcats had 13 points, one behind leading Penn StateFayette. Penn State Mont Alto and Penn State Wilkes-Barre were tied with 10.5 points followed by Penn State Beaver and Penn State Brandywine with 8.5, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Hazleton with 6.5, Penn State Greater Allegheny 5, Penn State York and Penn State Schuylkill 3.5 each and Penn State Scranton and Penn State DuBois 1.5 each. Penn College has won the cup for the past three years.
In other fall sports action, the men's soccer and cross-country teams, coached respectively by Enrique Castillo and Mike Paulhamus, won PSUAC championships. The soccer team finished 13-7-2 overall and was 9-1-1 in the conference. The tennis team, coached by Robert Kemrer, went 6-2 and placed second in the conference. The golf team, coached by Matt Haile, placed third in the PSUAC and the women's soccer team, coached by Markus Rybak, posted a 3-7-2 record while playing an independent schedule.
