Kathrine E. Dixon, a dental hygiene: health policy and administration concentration major from Houtzdale, has been chosen as the October "Student of the Month" by the Student Government Association at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Dixon, set to graduate in 2014, is a Resident Assistant in on-campus housing, a participant in the Penn College Presidential Leadership Program and president of the college's Earth Smart Club.
"One major strength is Kathrine's mature, conscientious approach to her academic work," her faculty nominator wrote. "Not only were her assignments submitted on time and in a manner consistent with the directions, her work was consistently superior. The level of her work bespoke her attentiveness in class."
That dedication was confirmed in her selection as the first recipient of the Tracy A. Garis Memorial Scholarship, endowed in honor of a Penn College dental hygiene student who died in a June 2010 traffic accident. Dixon also was awarded the United Concordia Dental Hygiene Scholarship.
"Apart from working hard to improve herself, she set high standards for classmates, encouraging them to work hard and persevere," her nominator added. "She would assume the responsibility of group leader and kept students on task during any given activity. She was energetic and possessed strong verbal and communication skills. She was an excellent role model in my class. Her enthusiasm was contagious."
The Student of the Month is selected numerous times each academic year based on commitment, service, role-model behavior, academics, leadership and campus involvement. Nominations from faculty/staff and other students are strongly encouraged.
