Penn College Men Seek Soccer Championship Monday

After back-to-back postponements Saturday because of snow and Sunday due to a wet field the Pennsylvania College of Technology second-seeded men's soccer team is set to host fourth-seeded Penn State Hazleton at 2 p.m. Monday with the Penn State University Athletic Conference champion at stake.

When the two teams met Oct. 18, Hazleton won, 1-0, handing the Wildcats their only conference loss against eight wins and a tie. Overall, Penn College is 11-6-2.

In Wednesday's semifinals, Penn College outdid third-seeded Penn State Brandywine, 3-1, while Hazleton advanced with a 3-2 win over top-seeded Penn State York.

In addition to seeking their fifth PSUAC title in six years under coach Enrique Castillo, the Wildcats are hopeful of earning a trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Conference national championships in Asheville, N.C., Thursday through Saturday. The bid will be awarded to the conference champ.

Also, it was announced on Friday that the college's women's volleyball team, 20-9 overall, was extended an at-large berth in the USCAA national championships Nov. 10-12 in Louisville, Ky.

Flashback Men's SoccerBen Shade, of Fleetwood, scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the PSUAC semifinal win over Brandywine. Also scoring for Penn College were Chris Brennan, of New Hope, and William DeAngelo, of Dallas. Goalie Aaron Volz, of West Chester, recorded six saves.

Women's SoccerThe Wildcats' final two matches of the season were canceled, the latter on Saturday due to snow, as they closed out a 3-6-2 season under second-year coach Markus Rybak.

Women's Volleyball Four players earned PSUAC All-Conference honors. Senior Lyndsey Smith, of Mechanicsburg; junior Tara Powell, of Burgettstown; sophomore Lindsay Moyer, of Canton, and freshman Kelly Hebert, Wellsboro, all made the cut with Hebert named "Newcomer of the Year" and Smith "Setter of the Year."

Smith earned first-team honors as she notched a team-leading 616 assists, ranking her 11th nationally in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Hebert also was named to the first team after having a great rookie season with 167 kills and 65 blocks. She is ranked 19th nationally in blocks.

Moyer, a second-team selection, was second on the team in kills with 157 and led the team in aces with 41. Powell earned an honorable mention for her solid play with 139 kills, 39 aces and 174 digs.

The Wildcats finished the year with a 16-2 conference record and second-place finish in the PSUAC. They are No. 6 in the USCAA national rankings No. 7 in the most recent Coaches' Poll.
