Alumni Exhibit Winners Announced at Gallery at Penn College

The Gallery at Penn College announced the winners of "Kaleidoscope: The Alumni Exhibit" during an opening reception on Oct. 7.

The Kaleidoscope exhibition is a celebration of the talented alumni of Pennsylvania College of Technology and its forerunners, Williamsport Technical Institute and Williamsport Area Community College. It features original artwork by 29 alumni from all three institutions.

First prize was awarded to Larry Erb, of Alto, Ga., for his photograph "M.C. Carlos 360." The photograph depicts the Michael C. Carlos Museum on the campus of Emery University and was made using a pinhole camera. Erb graduated from Penn College's immediate predecessor, W.A.C.C., in 1970 with a degree in graphic art. He then earned a bachelor's degree in arts and sciences from South Dakota State University and has been an artist-in-education throughout the Southeast for the past three decades.

Erb conducts primitive photography programs and has constructed dozens of walk-in camera obscuras. His photographs are in public and private collections, including the collection of the State of Georgia.

Second prize was awarded to Rick Karp, of Williamsport, for his photograph "Shoe Repair Shop, Market Street." After earning his bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University, Karp returned to W.A.C.C., graduating with a degree in computer information systems in 1982. Since retiring, he has been actively photographing people, architecture, nature and events. He is a member of the Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs and has exhibited in group and solo shows in the Williamsport area.

Third prize was awarded to Cindy (Warner) English, of Montoursville, for her work "Viola," constructed of Lego elements. English graduated from the W.A.C.C. in 1986 with a degree in technical illustration. English exhibits her original creations at national Lego fan festivals.

The juror was Matthew Parrish, of Williamsport. Parrish was born in Philadelphia. He earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Lycoming College and a master's degree in painting from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. He is the arts and entertainment editor at the Williamsport Sun-Gazette and maintains an art studio with his wife at the Pajama Factory in Williamsport.

Votes for the Viewer's Choice award will be accepted through the close of the exhibit, Nov. 6.

The gallery is open Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 2 to 7 p.m.; and Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Saturday and Monday). The gallery will be closed Oct. 14-16 in conjunction with the college's Fall Break.
