Phi Mu Delta Takes Children on Back-to-School Shopping Trip

Penn College's Phi Mu Delta fraternity worked with the Favors Forward Foundation in co-sponsoring a Thursday back-to-school shopping trip with three elementary-age youngsters at Walmart in Montoursville. The Adopt-a-Student program is but one initiative of the foundation, a social network of volunteers who share their "time, talents and treasures" to serve those in the local community who are experiencing life-changing hardships. "The family ... was in tears as they watched these young men in action," said Beth McMahon, foundation board president. "The kids couldn't quit smiling ... as they shopped for new clothes. I assure you three little kids entered their schoolrooms today ... holding their heads high and 'looking sharp' from head to toe. 'Thanks' goes out to Phi Mu Delta for caring enough to act!" It was not the chapter's first involvement with the organization, however. "Last holiday season, this group made beautiful gift baskets for the women in the YWCA shelter (who) have experienced unspeakable abuse at the hands of men," McMahon said. "The Phi Mu Delta gentlemen showed them that real men are compassionate and respectful. (They) handed them more than a gift basket; they handed them hope, which is the best gift of all!"Photos by Erin M.
