New Masonry Building Dedicated at Penn College

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Pennsylvania College of Technology today formally dedicated a new home on its main campus for masonry instruction.

The 17,829-square-foot, single-story Construction Masonry Building, designed by Murray Associates Architects, P.C., of Harrisburg, features a large, open lab area and reflects the latest in "green" technologies. Hands-on skills in stone, brick and block masonry, as well as fireplace construction, will be practiced by students in the new lab.

During the dedication for the $2 million building, Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour and Board of Directors Chairman Robert E. Dunham finished off placement of a keystone containing the names of the college and the facility, as well as the college's wildcat logo.

"This excellent new facility satisfies multiple needs," Gilmour said. "In addition to offering expanded and enhanced spaces for hands-on masonry education, it frees up room in the program's previous home, the Carl Building Technologies Center, for labs associated with our renewable energy technologies program."

The college's School of Construction and Design Technologies offers an associate degree in building construction technology: masonry emphasis. Graduates of the major may complete a bachelor's degree in residential construction technology and management. The school also offers a residential builder certificate program in which students gain hands-on skills in every phase of residential construction including concrete, block, brick and stone masonry. In addition, the building construction technology associate-degree major includes a Masonry Principles class, in which students learn the basics of block and brick masonry.

"We're excited to have this wonderful new facility for masonry-related instruction," said Marc Bridgens, dean of construction and design technologies. "The additional space and enhanced ventilation, lighting and overall appearance provide a great learning environment. And, we'll be able to permanently display some student work much like an artist displaying artwork."

The featured speaker for the dedication ceremony was Jan Boyer, executive director of the Pennsylvania Concrete Masonry Association and the Cast Stone Institute. She also serves on the board of directors for The Masonry Society and the Masonry Alliance for Codes and Standards.
