A recent nursing graduate from Pennsylvania College of Technology was awarded a scholarship from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania, which administers the Jack E. Barger Sr. Scholarship on behalf of the VFW, recently announced six recipients of the scholarship for 2011, including Travis M. Rupert, who earned an associate degree in nursing from Penn College in May.
The fund awards $1,000 scholarships to nursing students who are veterans in active-duty military or are the child or spouse of a veteran or active-duty personnel. Established by the Department of Pennsylvania VFW, the scholarship fund is in memory of Barger, a department commander who died while in office.
"We congratulate this year's scholarship recipients and are pleased to support their career in nursing," Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania President Marilyn D. Harris said in a release from the foundation. "The VFW Jack Barger Scholarship fund allows the NFP to expand its support of nursing students even further into the community."
The Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania is organized and operated to support the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association. The association, which represents more than 208,000 nurses, works to advance and support the nursing profession and to improve health for all in the commonwealth. It is a constituent member of the American Nurses Association.
