Luke Haefner Memorial Scholarship Established at Penn College
Monday, July 25, 2011
A Pennsylvania College of Technology student who died in June will be memorialized through a scholarship fund at the college.
The Luke James Haefner Memorial Scholarship Fund will be open to residents of Lycoming County who are full-time students in Penn College's information technology sciences-gaming and simulation bachelor-degree major. Haefner was a sophomore in that major at the time of his death.
If no eligible student is found from the information technology sciences-gaming and simulation major, the award can be made to a Lycoming County resident enrolled full time in any major offered through the college's School of Business and Computer Technologies.
The Luke James Haefner Memorial Scholarship Fund will make an initial award of $1,000 for a student enrolled for the Fall 2011 semester at Penn College.
The scholarship fund was established by Luke Haefner's mother, Patricia J. Haefner, who is a Penn College alumna and secretary to the college's vice president for academic affairs and provost.
"Luke was one of the most compassionate people that I have ever known, and he always worried more about everyone else's needs than his own," Haefner said."I can think of no better way to honor my son's memory than by giving another young person extra help in pursuing their education. In my heart, I believe Luke would truly be pleased."
Donations to the Luke James Haefner Memorial Scholarship Fund can be made by mail to: Penn College Institutional Advancement Office, One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA, 17701, or online (click on "Make a Gift").
