For the second consecutive year, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants has awarded a renewable scholarship to a Pennsylvania College of Technology baccalaureate accounting major and honored two May graduates as "Outstanding College Seniors."
Steven W. Garner, of Lock Haven, received a $3,000 scholarship from PICPA, an association of more than 20,000 certified public accountants working to improve the profession and better serve the public interest. Nicole M. Giersdorf, of Williamsport, received an identical award last year.
The multiyear scholarships are presented to candidates who "best satisfy the requirements of high intellectual capacity, leadership potential, financial need and intent to pursue a career in accounting," according to the association. Garner's award can be renewed annually until the completion of his degree, provided he remains a full-time student, maintains a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and fulfills any other requirements.
Chosen among exemplary college seniors were Chad M. Chervinsky, of Williamsport, and John T. Edinger II, New Columbia, both of whom graduated in May from the college's four-year accounting major.
Under association guidelines, the award is given to a senior "who shines in academia, expresses a serious interest in accounting and demonstrates a desire to continue in the accounting field." Nominated by faculty members, winners receive a certificate, recognition medal and a one-year affiliate membership to the PICPA.
Penn College's accounting majors, offered through the School of Business and Computer Technologies, are dually accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.
