More Penn College Sports Events Washed Out; Men's Basketball Player Earns Top Honor

For the second week in a row, all Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball and softball games were postponed due to inclement weather, but the Wildcats hit the jackpot as men's basketball player Leroy Joiner was named the Penn State University Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Basketball Joiner, a junior from Williamsport, was named Player of the Year in voting by the conference's coaches. He led Wildcats in scoring and rebounding with averages of 21.5 and 11.7, respectively.

"He certainly has earned it. We leaned on him very heavily and he was our go-to guy," coach Gene Bruno said.

"In the conference championship, during a seven-minute stretch, Leroy Joiner took that game over and literally belonged on that floor as a Division I player. That's how well he played up until the point he fouled out. Leroy has elevated the program over the last three years. He has been the key to our success in back-to-back Final Four appearances," the coach added.

Joiner and senior Greg Solyak (Lititz) also were named PSUAC All-Conference selections, while senior Phil Kaylor (Lebanon) was awarded Honorable Mention. It marked the third time Joiner has been honored by the PSUAC and first time for Solyak and Kaylor. Earlier, Joiner was named a United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II First Team selection for the third time and Solyak was named a USCAA Honorable Mention. Solyak ended his career as the college's all-time leading scorer with 1,626 points. Joiner is second with 1,620. This season, the Wildcats finished 15-13 overall and placed second in the PSUAC toPenn StateBeaver after falling in the championship game in overtime.

For the Penn College women, sophomore Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) and freshman Tosha Stover (Bellefonte) earned all-conference honors -- Steer on the First Team and Stover as an Honorable Mention. Steer led the team in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per game. She also averaged 7.5 rebounds, had 50 assists and 32 steals. She closed out her career with 601 points. The Lady Wildcats ended the season with an 8-15 overall record.

Men's Volleyball Penn College completed its regular season Thursday with a win over Bucknell's club team, 25-8, 25-20, 25-21.

On Saturday, the Wildcats competed in the Middle Atlantic Club Volleyball Conference playoffs at Bloomsburg University and went 1-2 in pool play, beating Rutgers Red, 26-25, 24-21, and losing to club teams from Kutztown, 28-26, 13-25, 13-15, and Harrisburg Area Community College, 16-25, 26-24, 11-15, to finish 11-11. Millersville defeated Messiah for the conference championship.
