Madigan Library Forum to Improve Gardeners' Discerning Eye
Thursday, March 10, 2011
As winter soon gives way to gardening season, Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library offers a timely presentation to help green thumbs differentiate between beneficial and baneful backyard growth.
Horticulture instructor Carl J. Bower Jr. will present a free, public forum "Plants: Friend or Foe?" from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in the library's second-floor reading loft. Light refreshments will be served.
"Don't let a pretty flower or a nice berry fool you into a false sense of security. There are many plants that are unwelcome visitors in your garden," he said. "Invasive plants can wreak havoc on the ecosystem you call your yard. Displacing native plants, clogging waterways and providing little food for wildlife are some ways these plants cause problems some even cause physical harm. Learn more about what these plants do and what they look like because it's only a matter of time before they visit your garden."
Bower is a 1993 landscape/nursery technology graduate of Penn College and holds the Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturist designation from the Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association. He joined the college as an adjunct faculty member in 2001 and, in 2006, became a full-time instructor in the School of Natural Resources Management.
