Grant Helps Fund Baseball Team's Spring Break Tournament Travel

A $4,000 grant from the Pfizer Foundation will help the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team defray travel-related expenses for a Spring Break 2011 trip to The Cal Ripken Experience training facility.
Douglas T. Byerly, Penn College's director of athletics, said the team will play a slate of nonconference games at The Ripken Experience, located in Myrtle Beach, S.C. All of the funds for the trip must be self-generated by the team; expenses total approximately $10,000.
This is the Penn College squad's first trip to The Ripken Experience, which provides an opportunity to play quality programs early in the spring season, Byerly said.
Byerly credited the parents and grandparents of Skylar Gingrich, a junior first baseman and pitcher from Lititz, for making the college aware of the opportunity and helping it meet the grant's requirements.
"The funds provide a way to make this trip affordable to all the players on the team, and we can't say "˜Thank you' enough to the Gingrich family for making us aware of this program," he said.
