Wildcats Post 13-4 Record in Past Week's Competition

Monday, September 20, 2010

Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams posted a combined 13 wins, four losses over the past week and one Wildcat continued his preparations for international competition.

FLASHBACK Cross-Country Freshman Jacob Shedden (Canton) set a new course record with a time of 28 minutes, 28 seconds in leading the men's team to a first-place finish in a nine-team field at Penn State Scranton on Saturday. Former Wildcat Mark Cordeiro (Canton) held the old record in 29:48. Penn College's Travis Cain was second in 31:25. For the Penn College women, Tamara Pavlov (Lewisburg) placed third over a shorter course in 27:53.

Golf For the second week in a row, Penn College finished second to Penn State Mont Alto in a conference tournament. Host Mont Alto topped a four-team field with a 311, while the Wildcats posted a 325. Following were Penn State New Kensington at 353 and Penn State Fayette at 395. Eric Schall (Jersey Shore) recorded a 77 for Penn College and finished third among the individuals. The Wildcats now are 10-2 overall and in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.

Men's Soccer Penn College improved to 3-1 overall with a 1-0 win over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday. Chris Brennan (New Hope) scored the game's only goal in the 46th minute. The Wildcats took 18 shots on goal and limited Southern Virginia to six. On Saturday, the Wildcats fell to crosstown NCAA Division III rival Lycoming College, 2-0, to drop to 3-2 overall.

Women's Soccer The team dropped to 1-2 after a 3-2 loss to Reading Area Community College on Thursday. Reading scored twice in the first seven minutes before goals by Wildcats Kim Daley (Springfield Center, N.Y.) and Jocelyn Moyer (Tower City) evened things. Reading, however, came back late to win. Saturday's scheduled match with Penn State DuBois was canceled.

Team Tennis After losing just one match a year ago and only two the season before, the Wildcats fell to 0-2 Tuesday with a 5-4 home loss to Penn State York. Jacob Kuska (Mohnton) and Robert Kemrer (Milton) won at the men's Nos. 3 and 4 singles positions, respectively. Danni Trout (Harrisburg) won by default in women's singles and also won by default in women's doubles with teammate Rachel Emmons (Washington, N.J.). Penn College notched its first win with a 9-0 shutout of Penn State Lehigh Valley Saturday. Shane Burridge (Ephrata), Kemrer and Kuska all were winners in men's singles and doubles, as were Emmons and Trout on the women's side.

Women's Volleyball On Saturday, Penn College improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the PSUAC with a 3-0 win at Penn State Hazleton. Paula Monteiro (Brazil) had seven digs, two blocks and five kills, Ashley Matson-Donahay (Troy) five aces and five kills and Lyndsey Smith (Mechanicsburg) 25 assists and five digs.

ON THE HORIZON Danny Wido, a senior from Shickshinny, will represent Penn College and the United States as a member of the men's compound team that will compete at the eighth World University Archery Championship in Shenzhen, China, Thursday through Sunday (Sept. 23-26).

"He's definitely excited to head over. It's the first time he's ever competed internationally. I feel he's going to do very, very well," said Wildcats coach Chad Karstetter. "If he shoots anything like he did at nationals last year, he's very capable of winning the whole thing." Last May at the U.S. Intercollegiate Archery Championships at Texas A&M University, Wido claimed the individual national championship in men's compound and led the Penn College men's compound team to a collegiate title, too. He is a two-time individual national collegiate champ and three-time All-American. "He has been practicing. Not as much, probably, as I would have liked as a coach, but, with his school load this semester in his senior year, he is pretty busy. We set up some targets here at the school and he's tried to keep in shape and keep everything fine-tuned," Karstetter said. Wido will compete in individual and team compound events, and also may compete in a mixed-team event. Having participated in two world championships more than a decade ago when he was a student at the college himself, Karstetter knows what Wido is in for. "It will be a different experience something you'll never experience nationally. When you go there, everybody is a good as you are. It's pretty tough competition. It probably will be the toughest competition he has ever faced. But for as good as he is, and as good as he has shot the last couple of years, he's going to do well," Karstetter predicted.
