Pennsylvania College of Technology's women's volleyball team opened its season over the weekend by going 1-2 in the Penn State Beaver Volleyball Classic. The Wildcats defeated Penn State Beaver, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-22; and lost to Ohio State Marion, 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 22-25; and University of Cincinnati Clermont, 25-23, 22-25, 28-30, 13-25. Tara Powell (Burgettstown) was named to the All-Tournament Team as she notched 35 digs, 10 kills and three aces.
"The team did well this weekend," said head coach Bambi Hawkins. "It is going to be fun to see what they can do with a few adjustments and some more time with each other. They communicated well, showed some great offense and frustrated their opponents with a tenacious defense."
Statistically for Penn College, Samantha Davis (Spring Church) had 12 aces, 11 blocks and nine kills, while Lindsay Moyer (Canton) added 13 blocks and 17 kills to the mix. Lyndsey Smith (Mechanicsburg) was a strong setter, capturing 49 assists.
FlashbackOver the summer break, a few Penn College archers entered and did well in the first USIAC national 3-D championship. Four Wildcats took firsts: Zack Plannick (Coraopolis) in male unlimited, Brad Ferguson (Lewistown) in male bowhunter, Kjirsten Radencic (Dushore) in women's unlimited and Glen Thomas (Mercer) in recurve. Each won a $500 scholarship. Also entered were archers from Texas A&M, Maryland, Edinboro and Liberty College. "Three-dimensional archery brings a whole new look at target archery," explained Penn College coach Chad Karstetter. "The course is set up in the woods, field or a combination of the two. There were 40 targets and each archer shot 20 arrows Saturday and 20 Sunday. They are 3-D animal targets set at an unknown distance out to 45 yards. Archers set out in groups of four and head to the first target. Each archer walks up to a shooting stake and judges how far away the target is. Then, with binoculars, they look for the scoring rings (they are different on each target and are located in the vital area of the animal). They set their sight or pick their pin and shoot. When all four are done they score their arrows and head to the next target."On the HorizonFour Penn College teams open their seasons this week golf Monday at White Deer, men's and women's soccer on Wednesday at Penn State Abington and men's and women's cross-country on Saturday at Delaware Valley.Schedule/ResultsWomen's Volleyball Overall record: 1-2Friday, Aug. 27 vs. Ohio State University at Marion in Penn State Beaver Classic, L, 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 22-25.
